Congress leader Rahul Gandhi faced resistance from local authorities on Thursday when he was stopped from entering the Ambedkar Hostel at Mithila University in Darbhanga, Bihar, where he was scheduled to launch the ‘Shiksha Nyay Samvad’ program. Undeterred, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha took a detour on foot to reach the venue, addressing a large gathering of students and supporters amidst heightened political tensions ahead of the state’s upcoming assembly elections.
The incident occurred when Gandhi’s vehicle was halted at the university gate, with officials citing administrative reasons for denying entry. Congress workers alleged that the Bihar government deliberately obstructed the event, pointing to the authorities’ refusal to grant permission for the program at the hostel and their suggestion of an alternative venue. Defiant, Gandhi walked through the campus to the hostel, where he was greeted with enthusiastic cheers and chants of ‘Jai Bhim’ from the crowd.
Addressing the students, Gandhi criticized the state government’s actions, framing the obstruction as an attempt to suppress the voice of marginalized communities. “They tried to stop me, but your energy and spirit cannot be contained. This is the same energy that fights for justice and equality,” he said, holding aloft a portrait of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar to resounding applause. He used the platform to advocate for a nationwide caste census, reservations in private educational institutions, and the release of funds under the SC/ST sub-plan, emphasizing their importance for social justice.
Gandhi connected with the audience by inviting a student from a family of daily wage earners to share his perspective. The student spoke about discrimination faced by backward classes and their lack of representation in media, urging Gandhi to raise these issues in Parliament. The Congress leader responded warmly, thanking the student and extending greetings to his family, which resonated deeply with the attendees.
The event underscored the growing political friction in Bihar, with the caste census and social equity emerging as key issues in the electoral discourse. Gandhi’s visit to the Ambedkar Hostel, a symbolic space for Dalit students, was seen as a strategic move to galvanize support among marginalized communities. Congress leaders later condemned the state administration’s actions, accusing them of undermining democratic engagement.
The ‘Shiksha Nyay Samvad’ marked Gandhi’s first major public interaction in Bihar since the announcement of the assembly election schedule, signaling an aggressive campaign push by the opposition. Despite the administrative hurdles, his ability to reach the venue and address the students reinforced his message of resilience and commitment to inclusive politics.
