The complainant, Durgappa, who belongs to the Bovi community (a Scheduled Caste), previously served as a faculty member at IISc’s Centre for Sustainable Technology. He alleges that in 2014, he was falsely implicated in a honey-trap case, leading to his dismissal from the institution. Furthermore, he claims to have been subjected to caste-based abuse and threats by those named in his complaint, which includes prominent figures such as former IISc Director Balaram P and current Director Govindan Rangarajan.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
Acting on the directives of the 71st City Civil and Sessions Court (CCH), the Sadashivanagar police registered a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against Gopalakrishnan and the other accused. The court’s involvement underscores the gravity of the allegations and the necessity for a thorough investigation to uphold justice and institutional integrity.
Response from Kris Gopalakrishnan
In light of the allegations, Kris Gopalakrishnan expressed deep sadness, stating, “I have always believed in fairness, justice, and treating everyone with respect, regardless of their background. I am deeply saddened that a law meant to protect marginalized communities has been misused to make false allegations against me.” He further clarified that his association with IISc as Chairman of the Council began in 2022, while the alleged incidents date back to 2014. Gopalakrishnan emphasized his faith in the judiciary, expressing confidence that justice will prevail.
Judicial Intervention
The Karnataka High Court has intervened in the matter, issuing an interim stay on the investigations and proceedings against Gopalakrishnan and others under the SC/ST Act. This judicial decision temporarily halts further action, allowing the court to assess the merits of the case and determine the appropriate course of action.
