The Bengaluru City Police have dismantled a sophisticated cybercrime operation, arresting a 12-member gang primarily from Uttar Pradesh for allegedly duping victims across India through fraudulent online job schemes. The arrests, made by the Adugodi police in southeast Bengaluru, followed a complaint from a homemaker who was lured with promises of lucrative part-time work-from-home jobs but was defrauded of significant sums.
The gang, comprising individuals with educational backgrounds ranging from school dropouts to BTech graduates, operated a well-organized racket that targeted vulnerable job seekers. Police investigations revealed that the syndicate tricked victims into making payments under the guise of registration fees or security deposits for fake job opportunities. The operation relied on hundreds of bank accounts, many opened in the names of migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar working in Bengaluru, to launder money obtained through phishing, job scams, and investment frauds.
Acting on the homemaker’s complaint, the police raided multiple locations in Bengaluru, recovering several SIM cards, ATM cards, and cash linked to the illicit activities. The gang’s members, hailing from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, were found to be coordinating with handlers possibly based in southeast Asian countries, raising suspicions of an international connection. Authorities are probing whether the syndicate has ties to larger transnational cybercrime networks.
The bust highlights Bengaluru’s growing challenge with cybercrime, with the city reporting a significant share of India’s cyber fraud cases. Local police data indicate that thousands of such crimes remain undetected annually, straining law enforcement resources. The arrested individuals have been remanded to custody, and further investigations are underway to uncover the full extent of the racket and identify additional accomplices.
This operation underscores the need for greater public awareness about online scams and stronger measures to combat cybercrime, as fraudsters continue to exploit digital platforms to target unsuspecting citizens.
