A Deceptive Beginning
Zholia Alemi, born in Iran in the early 1960s, moved to Auckland in the early 1990s where she enrolled in the University of Auckland’s medical programme. She passed her first-year exams after a second attempt but failed to progress further and was ultimately barred from continuing—leaving New Zealand without any medical qualification.
In 1995, she relocated to the UK, submitting a forged degree certificate and verification letter from the University of Auckland to the General Medical Council (GMC), which granted her registration. That registration enabled her to begin an NHS medical career under false pretenses.
Nearly Two Decades Inside the NHS
From 1998 to 2017, Alemi worked as a consultant psychiatrist across NHS trusts in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. She earned between £1 million and £1.3 million and was even empowered to detain mental health patients against their will.
Over time she moved frequently between jobs, allegedly to avoid suspicion. Despite concerns, complaints, and warnings from colleagues and patients, no verification of her fraudulent credentials was performed by the GMC or her employers
Criminal Acts Beyond Medicine
In 2018, she was separately convicted at Carlisle Crown Court of forging a will and using power of attorney to benefit from the estate of an elderly patient she had treated—a crime that led to a five-year sentence.
This criminal conviction prompted local journalist Phil Coleman to contact the University of Auckland, uncovering the lack of a valid medical qualification. That investigation began the formal scrutiny into her NHS registration.
2023 Trial & Conviction
In January 2023, Manchester Crown Court heard a retrial on 20 charges including fraud, forgery, deception, and others. Prosecutors presented evidence that Alemi had knowingly used forged documents to secure NHS positions.
On 15 February 2023, the jury found her guilty of:

A few weeks later, on 28 February, she was sentenced to seven years in prison. The presiding judge called her conduct a “deliberate and wicked deception,” condemning how the GMC failed to detect the fraudulent documents.
Financial Consequences
In June 2025, Manchester Crown Court ordered Alemi to repay £406,624—representing the known NHS funds she had earned fraudulently—or face an additional 2.5 years in jail.
Specialist investigators from the NHS Counter Fraud Authority, working alongside Cumbria Police, traced and restrained her assets under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
