Visa Services Timeline
Initially, the consulate will not offer visa services. Ambassador Garcetti acknowledged this and assured that efforts are underway to commence visa operations as soon as possible. He emphasized the importance of facilitating travel for students, professionals, and tourists, stating, “We want to see more tourists. We want to see more students. We want to see more businessmen and women coming.”
Significance for Bengaluru and Karnataka
The inauguration of the consulate is expected to ease the process for residents of Bengaluru and neighboring regions who previously had to travel to Chennai or Hyderabad for U.S. visa services. Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, hailed the event as a momentous occasion, underscoring Bengaluru’s importance on the global stage. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya also highlighted the benefits for locals, noting that the consulate will “immensely benefit lakhs of Bengalureans, including students, professionals, and families, by easing their U.S. travel and visa requirements.”
