“UGC Clarifies Minimum Criteria for Assistant Professor Recruitment: NET/SET/SLET and PhD Requirements Defined”
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a clarification regarding the revised minimum criteria for the direct recruitment of Assistant Professors in all universities and colleges. This comes after the UGC’s notification on July 5, which stated that NET/SET/SLET would be the minimum requirement for such recruitment across Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).
In a tweet, UGC Chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar provided the much-needed clarification. He emphasized two key points: “(1) For those with a Master’s degree, UGC-NET/SLET/SET is the minimum requirement for direct recruitment as an Assistant Professor, and (2) PhD degree holders, awarded as per UGC Regulations, are eligible for direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professor and are exempted from UGC-NET/SLET/SET.”
This clarification aims to address any confusion or ambiguity regarding the minimum criteria for Assistant Professor recruitment. It distinguishes between candidates holding a Master’s degree and those with a PhD, outlining the specific requirements and exemptions for each category.
By setting clear guidelines, the UGC ensures transparency and uniformity in the recruitment process across HEIs. The UGC-NET/SLET/SET serves as a benchmark for candidates with a Master’s degree, while those who have obtained a PhD in accordance with UGC Regulations enjoy exemption from these qualifying exams.
This clarification not only assists aspiring Assistant Professors in understanding the eligibility criteria but also emphasizes the significance of research and advanced academic achievements in the recruitment process.
HEIs and potential applicants can now proceed with a clearer understanding of the minimum criteria for direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professor, allowing for a streamlined and informed selection process.
