According to the survey results, a significant majority of Kerala students studying abroad—specifically, 7 out of 10—expressed either a lack of intention or uncertainty about returning to Kerala upon completion of their education. This finding underscores a prevailing trend among Kerala’s youth population, wherein a considerable number of students opt to pursue educational opportunities overseas and subsequently choose to remain abroad for various reasons.
The survey outcomes raise important considerations regarding Kerala’s educational landscape, brain drain phenomenon, and the factors influencing students’ decisions to stay abroad or return to their home state. While studying abroad offers valuable academic, professional, and personal growth opportunities, it also poses challenges in terms of retaining talent and fostering socio-economic development within Kerala.
As stakeholders in Kerala’s educational and socio-economic sectors, it is essential for us to explore avenues for engaging with students studying abroad, understanding their aspirations and concerns, and creating conducive environments that encourage their return and meaningful contribution to Kerala’s development.
The insights gleaned from the survey underscore the need for proactive measures to address the root causes of student emigration, enhance educational opportunities and infrastructure within Kerala, and create pathways for reintegration and harnessing the talent and expertise of returning students.
