No Hate Speech Offence Found in Wrestlers’ Protest: Delhi Police Files ATR

hate speech

The Delhi Police has submitted an action taken report (ATR) to the court regarding a plea seeking the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against protesting wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik. The plea alleged that the wrestlers made “false allegations” against BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

According to the report filed by the Delhi Police, the complainant accused the wrestlers of raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Jantar Mantar, classifying it as hate speech. However, after examining the video provided by the complainant, the Delhi Police stated that the wrestlers were not seen raising any slogans and that no offense of hate speech could be established.

In their report, the Delhi Police mentioned, “Based on the complaint and the video clip submitted by the complainant, no cognizable offense of hate speech is discernible. The protester wrestlers, including Sh. Bajrang Punia and Ms. Vinesh Phogat, were not observed raising any such slogans in the video clip.” The Police requested the court to dismiss the application. The application was filed on behalf of Bam Bam Maharaj Nauhatiya, claiming to be the national chief of the ‘Atal Jan Party.’ The court has scheduled the case for further hearing on July 7.

This development marks the first breakthrough in the prolonged standoff between the wrestlers and the government regarding allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation by Brij Bhushan. On Wednesday, the wrestlers agreed to temporarily suspend their protest until June 15, following discussions with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. The deadline set by the minister stipulates that the Delhi Police will file a chargesheet in the case by that date.
