Ten-man Bayern held 3-3 by Viking in Champions League thriller as Kane scores twice

Norway's Viking came from behind late to snatch a draw against Bayern Munich, who had recovered from two goals down before Michael Olise was sent off.

Ten-man Bayern held 3-3 by Viking in Champions League thriller as Kane scores twice

Bayern Munich were held to a dramatic 3-3 draw by Norwegian side Viking FK in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, 13 October, in Stavanger, conceding an equaliser in the final minute after a remarkable comeback of their own.

Viking strike first

The hosts, playing in front of a capacity crowd of 15,900, made a dream start. Stensness headed in from a corner in the second minute to put Viking ahead. Bayern had most of the ball and created the better chances for long spells of the first half, but Christiansen doubled the lead on a counter-attack in the 38th minute, sending the Norwegians into the break 2-0 up.

Bayern fight back

The Bundesliga side turned the game around after half-time. Harry Kane converted a 54th-minute penalty after Konrad Laimer was fouled, then headed in the equaliser from a Joshua Kimmich cross six minutes later. Luis Diaz had a goal ruled out for offside, but he made amends shortly afterwards, putting Bayern 3-2 ahead in the 71st minute after a pass from Laimer.

Bayern's control did not last. Michael Olise was shown a second yellow card in the 73rd minute, leaving the visitors with ten men for the closing stages, and Viking kept pushing forward. In the 90th minute, H. Haugen rose to head in a late cross and earn the Norwegian club a memorable point.

What it means

The draw is a disappointing result for Bayern, who had fought back from two goals down only to drop points against a side with far less Champions League experience. Olise's dismissal proved costly, and Bayern were also without regular goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, with Jonas Urbig starting in goal, according to pre-match reports.

For Viking, the result is a landmark night, with the home crowd celebrating a point against one of Europe's most successful clubs after twice seeing their team respond to setbacks.

Bayern return to Bundesliga action at home against RB Leipzig on Saturday. Tuesday's other Champions League fixtures included Arsenal against Lille, Galatasaray against Barcelona and Atletico Madrid against Manchester United.
