At least 17 killed in stampede at Kolkata Durga Puja pandal as sudden rain sparks rush
A crush at the exit of the Chorbagan community puja in north Kolkata on Maha Saptami left at least 17 people dead and about 25 injured. Organisers have been detained and the pandal sealed.

At least 17 people were killed and around 25 injured on Saturday evening when a crowd surged at the exit of a Durga Puja pandal in the Chorbagan area of north Kolkata, according to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Most of the victims were women, and a young child was among the dead, media reports said.
The crush took place at about 7:40 pm on Maha Saptami, one of the busiest evenings of the festival, at the Sarada Park (Chorbagan) community puja near Chittaranjan Avenue, in the Girish Park police station area. The victims were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. On Sunday morning, news agencies quoted the chief minister as saying the toll had risen to 19, with two of the injured dying later. One of the injured remained in critical condition.

What led to the crush
Officials and witnesses described a sudden spell of heavy rain that sent people who had been queuing outside rushing forward for shelter. A senior police officer said some visitors fell on the road as the crowd pushed ahead. Adhikari said early information pointed to an announcement by the organisers that set off the rush. Visitors also complained about narrow entry and exit points and a poorly lit lane leading to the pandal.
Emergency services, including the fire brigade and disaster management teams, reached the site, and the pandal was closed to the public. The state government opened a toll-free helpline for families.
Detentions and inquiry
Kolkata Police detained members of the puja organising committee and private security staff for questioning, and the site has been sealed. Forensic teams are examining the area and CCTV footage is being reviewed for crowd management lapses. Adhikari said he would request the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court to set up a fact-finding committee, according to agency reports. He also asked all puja committees to plan exit routes in coordination with the police.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as "extremely distressing" and announced Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each person who died, and Rs 50,000 for each injured person. He also sought a detailed report from the state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah postponed his scheduled programmes in the state on Sunday. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge called for proper treatment for the injured and a thorough probe, while former chief minister Mamata Banerjee said she was deeply saddened.
Why it matters
Durga Puja draws millions of visitors to Kolkata's streets over five days, and the most popular pandals see queues stretching for hours. The tragedy is likely to bring fresh scrutiny of crowd control, lighting and exit planning at large festival venues across India, particularly as weather can change crowd behaviour within minutes. Authorities asked some theme-based pandals to close temporarily while safety arrangements are reviewed.
