A difficult market backdrop
The listing comes at a tense time for Indian equities. The Nifty 50 fell about 2.4 percent and the Sensex about 2.2 percent last week, weighed down by Brent crude trading well above 110 dollars a barrel after Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and by steady selling from foreign portfolio investors.
Pressure on the rupee is also showing up in official data. India's foreign exchange reserves fell by about 5 billion dollars to roughly 721 billion dollars in the week ended October 16, the sixth straight weekly decline, according to Reserve Bank of India figures reported by PTI and Xinhua. Foreign currency assets accounted for the drop, while gold holdings rose slightly. Analysts have linked the fall to the central bank selling dollars to steady the currency.
Why it matters
Jio Platforms is one of the most closely watched listings in India's market history, and its debut will be seen as a test of investor appetite at a time of high oil prices and foreign outflows. Market participants will also track crude prices, US bond yields and the ongoing September-quarter earnings season this week. This article is for information only and is not investment advice.
