Glenn Maxwell retires from international cricket, will keep playing franchise T20 leagues
The 38-year-old Australian all-rounder, a three-time World Cup winner famed for his unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan, ends an international career of 286 matches.

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from international cricket on Monday, bringing the curtain down on a career that included three World Cup titles and one of the most celebrated innings in one-day history.
Maxwell, 38, had already stepped away from one-day internationals in June 2025. He will no longer be available for Australia in T20 internationals and has also retired from playing for Victoria. He will continue to play franchise T20 cricket, including for the Melbourne Stars in the upcoming Big Bash League season.

Maxwell said he was grateful for the time he was able to play for his country, according to Australian broadcaster ABC.
A career in numbers
Maxwell played 286 international matches for Australia: seven Tests, 149 ODIs and 130 T20Is. He scored more than 7,200 international runs and took 136 wickets with his off-spin. His 130 T20I appearances are the most by any Australian player.
In ODIs, he made 3,990 runs at a strike rate of about 127, among the highest in the format's history. In T20Is, he scored 2,897 runs at a strike rate above 154, with five centuries, level with India's Rohit Sharma for the most in men's T20 internationals.
He made his international debut in an ODI against Afghanistan in 2012 and played his last Test in 2017. His final T20I came against Oman in February 2026.
The Mumbai masterpiece
Maxwell was part of Australia's title-winning squads at the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups and the 2021 T20 World Cup. His defining moment came in India during the 2023 World Cup, when he struck an unbeaten 201 off 128 balls against Afghanistan at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. Australia had slumped to 91 for seven chasing 292, but Maxwell took them to a three-wicket win. The innings is widely regarded as one of the greatest in ODI cricket.
Why it matters for Indian fans
Maxwell is a familiar face for Indian audiences after years in the Indian Premier League and many series against India. His decision to focus on franchise cricket reflects a growing trend among senior players who are choosing T20 leagues over international duty in the later stages of their careers.
