At least 109 migrants, including 15 children, dead after boat capsizes off Djibouti
The UN migration agency says more than 100 people are still missing after one of the deadliest shipwrecks recorded off the East African coast.

At least 109 migrants, among them 15 children, have died after an overcrowded boat capsized off the coast of Djibouti in East Africa, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Sunday.
The vessel was reported to be carrying about 305 people. The IOM said more than 116 people remain missing, making it one of the deadliest shipwrecks recorded off Djibouti.

A dangerous route
The waters between the Horn of Africa and Yemen form part of what is often called the Eastern Route, used by tens of thousands of migrants each year. Many travel from Ethiopia and Somalia through Djibouti and across the Bab el-Mandeb strait to Yemen, hoping to reach Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states for work.
Boats on this route are frequently overloaded, and the crossing has become more dangerous as conflict in Yemen and the wider region has escalated. Aid agencies have repeatedly warned that smugglers put migrants at serious risk and called for safer, legal pathways for migration.
Context
The tragedy comes at a time of heightened military activity in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, which humanitarian groups say has made rescue efforts and monitoring of migrant boats more difficult.
