Alibaba's Qwen to power Apple Intelligence in China, testing starts November 4
Alibaba says its Qwen AI model will run features in Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence for users in China, with a public rollout planned for December.

Alibaba says its Qwen large language model will be built into Apple Intelligence for iPhone users in China. Apple's AI features have not been available in China until now, and this deal is the route to launching them there.
Alibaba announced the partnership over the weekend. Xinhua reported that the company said the agreement was reached on Saturday. Seoul Economic Daily reported that Alibaba disclosed it in a social media post on Sunday. The reports cited Alibaba's statements and did not include comment from Apple.

What users in China will get
According to Alibaba, Qwen will handle text and image understanding and content generation inside Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. Use is optional, and users will be able to choose what information they share. Alibaba said it will not use user requests or the responses generated to train its models.
The features will go out for testing in the latest iOS developer beta from November 4. They are due to reach users in China with the official iOS 27.3 release in December.
Eligibility depends on location. The integration will be open to people who bought an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone in China, or whose device location and Apple Account country or region are both set to China.
Why the deal matters
Apple Intelligence was added to China's list of approved generative AI services in July. Seoul Economic Daily said this is Apple's first partnership with a local AI model developer since that clearance. Alibaba chief executive Eddie Wu said Qwen would be deeply integrated across Apple's ecosystem.
Wang Xiaojie of the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications told Xinhua the deal was a significant step for the commercial use of Chinese AI models.
The arrangement shows how global technology companies are adapting AI products to national rules and local partners. That question also matters for India as it shapes its own AI governance approach. For now, the Qwen integration applies only to Apple users in China.
