The Maharashtra government is actively studying the “Love Jihad” laws enacted by other states in India to formulate its own legislation, according to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The move comes as part of the state’s efforts to address concerns related to alleged forced religious conversions through marriage.
Speaking to reporters, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis stated that the Maharashtra government is closely examining the existing laws in other states that aim to prevent and counteract what is commonly referred to as “Love Jihad.” The term “Love Jihad” is used to describe the alleged practice of individuals using romantic relationships as a means to convert people of other faiths to their own religion.
Fadnavis emphasized that the state government is taking a comprehensive approach to the matter and is considering all aspects while formulating its own law. He added that the objective is to safeguard the interests and rights of individuals, particularly women, and protect them from any coercive practices that might undermine their freedom of choice and consent.
Several states in India have enacted or proposed laws addressing the issue of “Love Jihad.” These laws have sparked debates and discussions on issues related to personal freedom, religious freedom, and gender rights. Proponents of such laws argue that they are essential to protect vulnerable individuals from being coerced into religious conversions through deceptive means.

They argue that existing laws are sufficient to address cases of coercion or fraud in any form of marriage and that specific laws targeting a particular community or interfaith relationships may be unnecessary and discriminatory.
