Liberty University, one of the largest evangelical Christian universities in the United States, has been fined $14 million for its mishandling of sexual assault cases and other crimes on campus. The fine, levied by the U.S. Department of Education, is one of the largest ever imposed on a university for violating federal campus safety laws.
The Department of Education found that Liberty University failed to properly report and respond to allegations of sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking, in violation of the Clery Act, which requires colleges and universities to disclose crime statistics and provide support services to victims. The university also allegedly failed to adequately train its staff and officials on how to respond to reports of sexual violence.
The fine comes amid growing scrutiny of how colleges and universities handle sexual assault cases and ensure the safety of their students.
