Karnataka to Boost Public Transport with Electric Buses Under PM E-Drive Scheme

Karnataka to receive electric buses under PM E-Drive Kumaraswamy

In a significant step toward sustainable urban mobility, Karnataka is set to receive a substantial allocation of electric buses under the central government’s PM E-Drive Scheme, Union Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy announced. The decision follows a formal proposal from the Karnataka government, led by Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, to enhance public transport systems in key cities, particularly Bengaluru, with eco-friendly vehicles.

Kumaraswamy, a former Karnataka Chief Minister, assured full support from the Ministry of Heavy Industries, stating that the allocation process is already underway. The electric buses will be introduced in a phased and prioritized manner to address the state’s growing need for efficient and environmentally friendly public transport. The minister emphasized the scheme’s role in promoting a cleaner and greener India, aligning with national goals for electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

The PM E-Drive Scheme, a flagship initiative, aims to accelerate EV penetration across India, with targets of 10% of new annual sales for electric two-wheelers and 15% for three-wheelers. Karnataka’s request for electric buses reflects its commitment to reducing air pollution and easing traffic congestion in urban centers. Bengaluru, a hub for technology and innovation, is expected to benefit significantly, with plans to integrate up to 7,000 electric buses into the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) fleet over time.

During a recent meeting in New Delhi, Reddy submitted the state’s proposal to Kumaraswamy, highlighting the urgent need to modernize public transport. The discussions focused on streamlining the rollout of electric buses and ensuring Karnataka receives adequate support from the central government. Kumaraswamy reiterated his commitment to the state, saying, “I will ensure Karnataka receives all due support from the Government of India.”

This development builds on Karnataka’s ongoing efforts to electrify its public transport. BMTC currently operates over 1,000 electric buses and plans to induct an additional 760 by mid-2026. The state has also seen a surge in EV adoption, supported by incentives and infrastructure development led by agencies like the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM). The addition of more electric buses is expected to further reduce carbon emissions and enhance the commuter experience with quieter, cleaner rides.

The announcement comes amid Kumaraswamy’s broader push for EV growth as Heavy Industries Minister. He recently revealed that EV sales in India crossed 14.08 lakh units in 2024, reflecting public trust in electric vehicles and the success of government incentives. The upcoming FAME-III scheme, set to be announced by November 2025, will further bolster subsidies and address gaps in previous programs, ensuring continued support for electric buses and other EVs.

Karnataka’s pursuit of electric buses under the PM E-Drive Scheme marks a milestone in its journey toward sustainable urban development. As the state prepares to integrate these vehicles, residents can look forward to a greener, more efficient public transport system that aligns with India’s vision for a self-reliant and environmentally conscious future.
