Guinness World Records (GWR) has recently announced the deactivation of the longest kiss world record, stating that the competition had become too dangerous. In a release posted on its website, GWR explained that certain rules of the contest were in conflict with its current policies and had led to safety concerns for the participants. As a result, GWR has replaced the longest kiss record category with the longest kissing marathon, which features more relaxed rules.
The last longest kiss event, held on February 12, 2013, in Pattaya, Thailand, lasted for an impressive 58 hours and 35 minutes, and it was won by Thai couple Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat. Nine couples participated in the competition, including a couple in their 70s who lasted 1 hour and 38 minutes before the husband could no longer stand. Ultimately, Ekkachai and Laksana emerged as the winners, receiving a grand prize of 100,000 Thai Baht ($3,300) and two diamond rings worth 100,000 Baht.
GWR explained that shortly after this record was set, the category was deactivated due to the stringent rules imposed on the participants. These rules included the requirement for contestants’ lips to be touching at all times, the prohibition of eating or drinking without parting their lips, and the mandate for participants to remain awake throughout the event. Rest breaks and adult diapers were not allowed.
According to GWR, the strict rules made participants susceptible to the dangers associated with sleep deprivation, including psychosis. The record-monitoring agency decided to introduce the longest kissing marathon category, which features more flexible rules to ensure the safety and well-being of the participants.
With this change, GWR aims to strike a balance between recognizing extraordinary achievements and prioritizing the health and safety of participants. The introduction of the longest kissing marathon category provides an opportunity for couples to demonstrate their endurance while maintaining a focus on their overall well-being.
