A trust registered in a small residential flat in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, has somehow secured permission from a northeastern state government to run a so-called “international” private university more than 2,000 kilometres away. The sparsely built campus — located in a remote village, accessible only by a dusty, unpaved road — stands in stark contrast to the grandiose name it bears.
Students Raise Alarm: No Real Infrastructure, No Transparency
When students gathered at the university in late 2024, they were met with disillusionment. What was advertised as a full-fledged international campus was, in reality, a modest two-storey building on a cleared patch of land — hardly befitting the label. Students demanded to see the mandatory approval letter, questioning whether the institution had the required accreditation. The administration, instead of providing clarity, attempted to prevent any recordings of their interaction — a move that only deepened suspicions.
The Trust That Runs It: Shadows Behind the Paperwork
The sponsoring body behind the university is a charitable trust, registered not for academic excellence but under a vaguely defined social-service mandate: it claims the right to set up orphanages, rehabilitation centres, yoga studios — and, among other things, educational institutes. This trust operates from a humble flat in a residential neighbourhood of Ghaziabad, not from a campus or office complex.
Yet, despite this modest origin, it gained backing from the state legislature in 2023 to establish the private university. What is more striking: the promoters of the trust and the individuals running the university donated significant sums — amounting to tens of lakhs of rupees — to the ruling political party in the state around the same time as approval was granted. None of this financial link finds a place on the university’s public documents or promotional material.
Political Proximity, Then Public Relations
The university has repeatedly showcased its closeness to powerful political figures — with visits by national and state-level leaders and government ministers. This backdrop of high-level attention helped the institution project legitimacy. But beneath the glossy images lies a troubling reality: a far-off trust, questionable infrastructure, students left uncertain, and opaque governance.
The Bigger Question — Is This Just One Instance?
This case raises uncomfortable questions about how private universities are being established across far-flung regions. Is this anomaly a one-off, or a part of a broader pattern where political donations become a foot in the door? If this story holds true, the stakes are high — for students enrolling in such institutions, for the credibility of higher education, and for trust in regulatory oversight.
