Parvathi Siddaramaiah, wife of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has voluntarily chosen to return 14 plots of land allocated to her by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA). This decision comes in the wake of an investigation into alleged irregularities regarding the allocation of these plots under a land compensation scheme. The investigation was prompted by a Karnataka Lokayukta FIR and later escalated with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filing a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The Allegations
The controversy centers on claims that Parvathi was allocated plots in upscale areas of Mysuru as compensation for land she allegedly did not own. The original land was reportedly in a lower-value area, and the scheme under which the allocations were made has faced scrutiny. The opposition has alleged corruption and political favoritism, with the BJP calling her move an “admission of guilt” and demanding the Chief Minister’s resignation.
A Personal Decision
In her letter to MUDA, Parvathi stated that the decision to relinquish the sites was made independently, without consulting her husband or family. She emphasized her desire to protect her husband’s honor and maintain his political integrity. She expressed her disappointment at being implicated in the controversy and urged political parties not to target families of public figures for political gain.
Legal and Political Fallout
MUDA has since initiated the process to cancel the deeds of these plots. The CM has denied any wrongdoing and vowed to fight the allegations legally, asserting that the investigation is politically motivated. This development, however, has intensified political attacks from the opposition, adding pressure on the Chief Minister amid ongoing inquiries.
Parvathi’s decision to return the sites has shifted the focus back to the legitimacy of the allocation scheme and the broader political implications for Siddaramaiah’s government. With both the Lokayukta and ED probing the matter, this issue is likely to remain a significant point of contention in Karnataka politics.
