Palike to Clean Up Its Act on E-Toilets After HC Reprimand

Palike to clean

In the wake of a stern reprimand from the High Court, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the city’s civic body, is set to undertake a comprehensive overhaul of its electronic public toilets (E-Toilets). The move comes after the court expressed its displeasure over the state of these facilities, highlighting the urgent need for improvement.

The High Court’s criticism followed a public interest litigation (PIL) that raised concerns about the condition and functionality of E-Toilets across the city. The petitioners had alleged that these facilities, meant to provide clean and accessible sanitation options, were often in a state of disrepair, unclean, and unusable.

In response to the court’s reprimand, the BBMP has vowed to address the shortcomings in the management and maintenance of E-Toilets. The civic body has outlined a plan that includes the following key aspects:

  1. Maintenance: The BBMP will focus on routine and preventive maintenance to ensure that E-Toilets are in good working condition. This includes repairing broken fixtures, cleaning facilities regularly, and addressing any issues promptly.
  2. Monitoring: The civic body will establish a robust monitoring system to track the performance of E-Toilets. This will involve routine inspections and the use of technology to report and rectify faults promptly.
  3. Security: Ensuring the safety and security of users will be a priority. Adequate lighting, security personnel, and surveillance systems will be put in place to create a safe environment.
  4. Public Awareness: BBMP plans to launch awareness campaigns to educate the public about the proper use and maintenance of E-Toilets, fostering a sense of community responsibility.

The BBMP has acknowledged the importance of electronic public toilets in providing clean and accessible sanitation facilities to the public, especially in densely populated areas. They recognize that maintaining these facilities is essential to preserving public hygiene and promoting a cleaner city.

The High Court’s intervention has catalyzed the BBMP into action, with the civic body pledging to make the necessary improvements promptly. Bengaluru residents and commuters are hopeful that these changes will lead to better-maintained and more functional E-Toilets across the city, enhancing the overall urban experience.
