A shocking robbery case near the outskirts of Bengaluru has highlighted how organized criminal gangs continue to exploit greed and deception to trap unsuspecting victims. In a carefully planned scheme, a businessman from Hyderabad was lured to Karnataka with the promise of acquiring valuable gold coins believed to be part of a hidden treasure. Instead of the lucrative opportunity he expected, the businessman was violently attacked and robbed of a large amount of money near the airport area. The incident has once again drawn attention to a pattern of scams where criminals use fake treasure or cheap gold offers to target wealthy individuals.
According to police investigations, the victim was a businessman identified as Vishwaprasad Reddy, who had been approached by a group claiming to possess a large quantity of gold coins. The suspects allegedly told him that the coins had been discovered during excavation work and that they wanted to sell them quietly at a price far below the prevailing market rate. Such claims often appear attractive to buyers who believe they can obtain valuable gold at a fraction of its actual price.
The criminals reportedly told the businessman that they had around four kilograms of gold coins available and offered to sell them at an unusually low price. They initially demanded a payment of about twenty lakh rupees for one kilogram of gold. Convinced that the deal could yield enormous profits, the businessman agreed to the offer and arranged to travel to Bengaluru with the cash.
After arriving in the city by flight, the businessman proceeded toward the northern outskirts of Bengaluru near the airport area as instructed by the suspects. He was directed to a relatively isolated location in Devanahalli taluk, an area not far from the international airport. Such locations are often chosen by criminal groups because they are secluded and provide easy escape routes after the crime is committed.
The businessman was accompanied by another individual during the meeting, believing that he was about to finalize the purchase of the gold coins. However, what awaited them at the location was not a business transaction but a carefully planned ambush.
According to police reports, a group of about six men suddenly confronted the victim and his associate when they arrived at the designated spot. The attackers were armed with wooden sticks and quickly turned violent. They allegedly assaulted the two men, striking them on the head and threatening them while demanding the bag containing the cash.
Within moments, the gang forcibly seized the bag that contained the twenty lakh rupees brought by the businessman for the supposed gold purchase. After grabbing the cash and other belongings, the attackers fled the scene, leaving the victims injured and shocked by the sudden turn of events.
Realizing that they had been victims of a well-planned fraud and robbery, the businessman later approached the police and filed a formal complaint. Authorities from the local police station began investigating the incident and visited the crime scene to collect evidence and gather information about the suspects.
Senior police officials inspected the location and launched an intensive investigation to track down the gang responsible for the crime. Special teams were formed to identify the suspects, analyze possible leads, and examine surveillance footage from nearby areas and road networks. Police believe the criminals may have used mobile communication and pre-arranged meeting points to lure the victim into the trap.
Investigators suspect that the gang may be part of a larger network involved in similar fraudulent activities across the region. In several previous cases reported in Karnataka and neighboring states, criminals have used the same strategy of claiming to possess hidden treasure or illegally obtained gold. They lure victims with promises of extremely low prices and then either rob them or disappear after collecting advance payments.
Police officials say such scams often target businessmen, traders, or individuals who may be willing to engage in unofficial gold purchases in hopes of making quick profits. The criminals exploit this expectation by presenting convincing stories about ancient coins, temple treasures, or gold discovered during construction work.
In some cases, the suspects even show small pieces of genuine gold or metal to gain the victim’s trust before arranging a larger transaction. Once the victim arrives with a large amount of cash, the gang attacks or intimidates them and escapes with the money.
Authorities have repeatedly warned the public against engaging in suspicious gold deals or transactions that involve illegal or undocumented treasures. Such offers are often used by criminal gangs to deceive buyers. Officials emphasize that any discovery of gold coins or historical artifacts must be reported to the authorities, and legitimate transactions should always occur through authorized channels.
The robbery near the Bengaluru airport also raises concerns about security in developing areas around major transportation hubs. The rapid growth of infrastructure around the airport has created several sparsely populated stretches of land, which criminals sometimes exploit as meeting points for illegal activities.
Police have increased surveillance and patrols in such areas while continuing their efforts to track down the suspects involved in the robbery. Authorities are also analyzing phone records and travel details to identify the individuals who contacted the victim and arranged the meeting.
The incident serves as a reminder of how easily criminals can manipulate human greed and curiosity to carry out large-scale frauds. Even experienced business professionals can fall victim to such schemes when presented with opportunities that appear too good to be true.
Beyond the immediate crime, cases like this also highlight the importance of verification and documentation in financial and professional transactions. Whether dealing with property, valuables, or official records, proper verification can prevent individuals from falling into fraudulent traps.
In the world of education and professional mobility, the same principle applies to academic documentation. The robbery involving the Hyderabad businessman ultimately stands as a cautionary tale about the risks associated with unofficial financial deals and the tactics used by organized fraud groups. Authorities hope that public awareness and stricter vigilance will help prevent similar crimes in the future while investigators continue their efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
