Bengaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old man who allegedly entered a women’s paying guest (PG) accommodation in Koramangala and robbed a resident at knifepoint.
The Incident
The accused reportedly gained access to the PG on September 1 by pretending to be a food delivery executive. Once inside, he threatened a woman at knifepoint and forced her to hand over her gold chain, earrings, and cash. The incident left the residents shaken and raised serious concerns about security measures in PG accommodations across the city.
The Arrest
Police traced the accused with the help of CCTV footage and swift investigation. He was taken into custody within 48 hours of the incident. The stolen jewellery and money have been recovered. Officials confirmed that the accused has a history of involvement in petty crimes and theft.
Security Concerns in PGs
This case has reignited debate about safety in paying guest facilities, which are home to thousands of students and working professionals in Bengaluru. Many residents have pointed out the lack of proper security checks, CCTV coverage, and visitor verification in such establishments.
Authorities have urged PG operators to tighten security, introduce ID verification systems for visitors, and ensure that surveillance cameras are functioning. Police have also advised residents to immediately report suspicious activity to ensure timely intervention.
Police Statement
A senior officer said:
“We were able to crack the case quickly because of CCTV evidence and cooperation from residents. The accused is in custody, and further investigation is ongoing.”
Wider Implications
The incident underscores the urgent need for stricter regulations governing PG accommodations in Bengaluru. With the growing demand for shared housing, ensuring safety for women residents remains a top priority for both administrators and law enforcement agencies.
