Rahul Gandhi Claims PM Modi Agreed to Caste Census Due to Public Pressure

Modi agreed to caste census out of fear Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, addressing students in Bihar’s Darbhanga district on Thursday, claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to conduct a caste census out of fear of backlash from the country’s marginalized communities. Speaking at an event organized at Mithila University’s Ambedkar Hostel, Gandhi asserted that the opposition’s persistent advocacy for the deprived sections forced the government’s hand on the issue.

The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha launched the ‘Shiksha Nyay Samvad,’ a public interaction program, ahead of Bihar’s upcoming assembly elections. He recounted overcoming administrative hurdles to reach the venue, stating that his car was stopped at the university gate, but he walked through a detour to address the students. “The Bihar government couldn’t stop me because of the energy you embody. It’s the same energy that made Modi bow,” Gandhi said, crediting public pressure for the government’s decision.

Gandhi alleged that Modi’s government primarily serves the interests of a small elite, leaving Dalits, OBCs, and tribals without adequate representation in governance, corporate sectors, or media. He urged the youth to remain focused on three key demands: a comprehensive caste census modeled on the survey conducted in Telangana, reservations in private educational institutions, and the release of funds allocated for Scheduled Castes and Tribes under the SC/ST sub-plan.

The Congress leader framed the caste census as a critical step toward social justice, accusing the government of reluctantly agreeing to it under public pressure. He emphasized that the opposition’s push for the census and constitutional values compelled the government to act. Holding aloft a portrait of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Gandhi drew cheers and chants of ‘Jai Bhim’ from the crowd, reinforcing his message of social equity.

Gandhi also connected with the audience by inviting a student from a poor family of daily wage earners to share his views. The student highlighted issues of discrimination against backward classes and their underrepresentation in media, urging Gandhi to raise these concerns in Parliament. Thanking the student, Gandhi extended greetings to his family, striking a personal chord with the attendees.

The event, marked by administrative resistance, saw Congress workers criticize local authorities for denying permission to hold the program at the hostel and suggesting an alternative venue. Gandhi’s remarks come amid heightened political activity in Bihar, with the caste census emerging as a pivotal issue in the run-up to the state elections. His claims underscore the opposition’s narrative of pressuring the government to address long-standing demands for social justice and equitable representation.
