A recent case of honey-trap extortion in Bengaluru has resulted in the arrest of three individuals who had been blackmailing a married man for over five years. The accused included a 38-year-old woman named Thabsum Begum, her brother Azeem Uddin, and Abhishek, who posed as a police officer.
The victim, a 46-year-old married man and R&D head at a multinational company, met Begum at a gym and was eventually manipulated into a physical relationship. Afterward, Begum used private videos and photos of the two to blackmail him, demanding money under the threat of releasing the content and filing false rape charges. Over the course of five years, the man paid substantial amounts, totaling Rs 2.25 crore, out of fear that his personal life would be ruined.
The accused not only extorted money from the victim but also made extreme threats, including the possibility of suicide, to further control him. The victim had withdrawn from his provident fund and borrowed money to meet the demands. When the demands escalated, he approached the police, leading to the arrests.
The case highlights the dangers of such honey-trap schemes, where personal relationships are exploited for financial gain, causing severe emotional and financial harm to victims
