In a significant drug bust, the Bengaluru police have arrested a Nigerian national with a substantial quantity of MDMA, a potent synthetic drug, valued at Rs 2 crore in the illegal market. The operation marks a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking and the illegal drug trade in the city.
Acting on a tip-off regarding the illegal drug trade, a special team of police officers conducted a targeted operation in a residential area in Bengaluru. The suspect, identified as Victor Okonkwo (32), a Nigerian national, was taken into custody during the raid.
Upon searching the premises where Okonkwo was residing, the police discovered a large quantity of MDMA, a psychoactive substance known for its recreational use and association with party drugs. The total value of the seized drugs is estimated to be around Rs 2 crore.
According to the police, the accused had been operating as a part of an international drug syndicate, involved in smuggling narcotics into India and distributing them through a network of associates.
Speaking about the arrest, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Mr. Ravi Channannavar, stated, “We have been closely monitoring the activities of this drug trafficking network for some time. The arrest of the Nigerian national with such a significant quantity of MDMA is a major achievement for our law enforcement efforts. We are committed to cracking down on drug peddlers and dismantling such networks.”
The seizure of the MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy, underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in curbing the illicit drug trade in Bengaluru. The city’s police have been proactively working to identify and apprehend drug traffickers to keep the community safe from the harmful effects of narcotics.
The arrested Nigerian national will be charged under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigations will seek to unravel the extent of the drug network and its associates.
Authorities have also alerted the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to assist in further investigations, as the case potentially involves international drug trafficking links.
The Bengaluru Police have appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug peddling anonymously through dedicated helplines. They have assured that strict action will be taken against those involved in illegal drug trade to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of the city’s residents.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement agencies remain resolute in their commitment to combating drug trafficking and promoting a drug-free and secure environment for all residents of Bengaluru.
