In a significant breakthrough, the Udupi police have apprehended five individuals involved in a high-value jewellery theft, recovering assets totaling ₹87.48 lakh. The stolen items were taken from a jewellery workshop in Udupi city, and the swift action by law enforcement has brought the culprits to justice.

The Incident

On September 9, 2025, Vaibhav Mohan Ghatge, the owner of a jewellery shop located on Vadiraj Road, reported a break-in at his establishment. The thieves had used duplicate keys to unlock the shop’s shutter and gained access to the premises. Inside, they targeted a refinery machine, making off with gold ornaments valued at approximately ₹95.71 lakh. The stolen items included 748.8 grams of gold ornaments, 4.445 kg of silver, ₹5 lakh in cash, and a Maruti Swift car used in the commission of the crime.

The Investigation

Under the leadership of Police Inspector Manjunath V. Badiger, the Udupi police initiated an extensive investigation. Collaborating with the Akluj police from Maharashtra, they identified and arrested the five suspects from Nimgav, Malshiras Taluk, Solapur district, on September 12. The accused were:

Praveen Appa Sathe (23)

Nilesh Bapu Kasturi (19)

Sagar Dattatreya Kandgale (32)

Bagav Rohit Shrimant (25)

Recovery of Stolen Assets

Following the arrests, the police recovered a substantial portion of the stolen property. The recovered items included:

748.8 grams of gold ornaments valued at ₹74.88 lakh

4.445 kg of silver worth ₹3.6 lakh

₹5 lakh in cash

A Maruti Swift car valued at ₹4 lakh

The total value of the recovered assets stands at ₹87.48 lakh, representing a significant recovery of the stolen goods.
